UEFA has 16 teams at World Cup 2026 — the largest allocation of any confederation. This is an increase from 13 in Qatar 2022, reflecting the expansion to a 48-team format. Twelve nations qualified directly and four more came through playoff paths.

The 12 direct UEFA qualifiers are: France, Germany, Spain, England, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, Switzerland, Scotland, Norway, and Austria. Four additional teams qualified through playoff paths in March 2026.

France and Spain are widely considered the top European contenders. France finished runner-up in 2022 and boast Mbappé alongside a deep squad. Spain won in 2010 and won Euro 2024 with a brilliant young side including Lamine Yamal.

UEFA nations have won 12 of the 22 World Cups played. Germany and Italy have won 4 each, France has won twice, and Spain and England once each. In terms of continents, only South America (10 wins) comes close.

Multiple UEFA nations have won the World Cup outright: Germany (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014), Italy (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006), France (1998, 2018), Spain (2010), and England (1966). Europe has dominated the tournament historically.

Group E (France vs Netherlands) and Group F (England vs Spain) stand out as the toughest UEFA-heavy groups. Both feature top-10 ranked nations who could plausibly win the whole tournament colliding in the group stage.
