AFC has a record 8 teams at World Cup 2026: Japan (Group F), South Korea (Group A), Australia (Group D), Saudi Arabia (Group H), Iran (Group G), Qatar (Group B), Jordan (Group J), and Uzbekistan (Group K). This is the largest Asian contingent in World Cup history.

South Korea reached the semi-finals at the 2002 World Cup (which they co-hosted with Japan) — the best result ever by an Asian team. Japan and Australia have each reached the Round of 16 in multiple tournaments. Saudi Arabia famously beat Argentina in their opening game at Qatar 2022.

Japan are arguably Asia's best chance for a deep run. They have consistently reached the Round of 16 and possess a technically gifted squad with players from Europe's top leagues. Their high-pressing, organised style has beaten top European nations. Reaching the quarter-finals in 2026 is a realistic target.

AFC runs a multi-round qualification process across three rounds. The top two from each of three third-round groups qualify automatically, with remaining spots decided through additional matches and intercontinental playoffs. AFC received 8 direct berths for 2026 — the most in confederation history — reflecting Asia's growing football strength.

Son Heung-min (South Korea, Tottenham), Daichi Kamada (Japan), and Sami Al-Najei (Saudi Arabia) are among Asia's top stars. Australia's Mathew Ryan and Mitchell Duke are key veterans. Japan's squad in particular is packed with Bundesliga and Serie A players.
