Cap
basicsAn appearance for a national team. Players "earn caps" each time they play internationally.
Example: "Ronaldo has over 200 caps for Portugal."
Clean Sheet
basicsWhen a goalkeeper doesn't concede any goals in a match.
Example: "The keeper got a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw."
Assist
basicsThe pass that leads directly to a goal being scored.
Example: "Messi provided the assist for Argentina's winning goal."
Hat-trick
basicsWhen a player scores three goals in a single match.
Example: "Mbappé scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final."
Brace
basicsWhen a player scores two goals in a single match.
Example: "Kane scored a brace against Panama."
Derby
basicsA match between local or traditional rivals.
Example: "El Clásico is the derby between Real Madrid and Barcelona."
Nil
basicsZero goals. "Two-nil" means 2-0.
Example: "Brazil won three-nil."
Pitch
basicsThe playing field. Also called the "field" in American English.
Example: "The pitch was in perfect condition."
Kit
basicsThe uniform worn by players, including shirt, shorts, and socks.
Example: "Brazil plays in their famous yellow kit."
Offside
rulesA player is offside if they're nearer to the opponent's goal than both the ball and the second-last defender when the ball is played to them.
Example: "The goal was disallowed for offside."
Added Time
rulesExtra minutes added at the end of each half to compensate for stoppages. Also called "stoppage time" or "injury time".
Example: "They scored the winner in the 5th minute of added time."
Extra Time
rulesTwo 15-minute periods played if a knockout match is tied after 90 minutes.
Example: "The match went to extra time after finishing 1-1."
Penalty Shootout
rulesIf still tied after extra time, each team takes 5 penalty kicks. If still tied, sudden death continues.
Example: "Argentina won the final on penalties."
Yellow Card
rulesA caution/warning from the referee. Two yellows = automatic red card.
Example: "He received a yellow for the foul."
Red Card
rulesPlayer is sent off and can't be replaced. Team plays with 10 men.
Example: "The defender was shown a straight red card."
VAR
rulesVideo Assistant Referee. Technology used to review goals, penalties, red cards, and mistaken identity.
Example: "VAR overturned the penalty decision."
Handball
rulesWhen the ball touches a player's arm or hand. May result in a foul depending on intent and position.
Example: "The referee called handball in the box."
Advantage
rulesWhen referee allows play to continue after a foul because stopping would harm the fouled team.
Example: "The ref played advantage as he was through on goal."
Booking
rulesReceiving a yellow or red card. Being "booked" means cautioned.
Example: "He was booked for dissent."
Formation
tacticsThe tactical arrangement of players (e.g., 4-3-3, 4-4-2). Numbers represent defenders-midfielders-forwards.
Example: "Spain plays a 4-3-3 formation."
Pressing
tacticsDefensive tactic where players actively close down opponents with the ball.
Example: "Germany's high press won them the ball back quickly."
Counter-attack
tacticsQuick attacking transition after winning the ball, exploiting space left by the opponent.
Example: "They scored on the counter-attack."
Possession
tacticsThe percentage of time a team has control of the ball.
Example: "Spain had 70% possession."
Tiki-taka
tacticsA style of play with short passing and movement, keeping possession. Associated with Spain and Barcelona.
Example: "Spain's tiki-taka dominated world football."
Park the Bus
tacticsDefensive tactic where all outfield players stay deep to protect the goal.
Example: "They parked the bus to protect their 1-0 lead."
False 9
tacticsA striker who drops deep into midfield, creating space for wingers and midfielders to attack.
Example: "Messi revolutionized the false 9 role."
Overlap
tacticsWhen a fullback runs past the winger on the outside to receive a pass.
Example: "The left-back made an overlapping run."
Through Ball
tacticsA pass that goes between or behind defenders for a teammate to run onto.
Example: "A beautiful through ball split the defense."
One-Two
tacticsA quick exchange of passes between two players to beat a defender. Also called "give and go".
Example: "They played a quick one-two into the box."
Banger
slangA spectacular goal, usually from long range.
Example: "He scored an absolute banger from 30 yards!"
Worldie
slangA world-class goal. Even more spectacular than a banger.
Example: "That volley was a complete worldie!"
Tekkers
slangTechnical skill, especially impressive dribbling or tricks.
Example: "Neymar's tekkers are unmatched."
Nutmeg
slangPassing the ball through an opponent's legs.
Example: "He nutmegged the defender before scoring."
Thunderbastard
slangAn extremely powerful shot, usually a goal.
Example: "He hit an absolute thunderbastard into the top corner!"
Shithouse
slangA player who uses dark arts, time-wasting, and provocation.
Example: "He's the ultimate shithouse defender."
Bottle
slangTo "bottle" is to fail under pressure. "Bottler" describes someone who chokes.
Example: "They bottled the final again."
Class
slangDescribes exceptional quality or skill.
Example: "Modric is pure class."
Scenes
slangUsed to describe exciting or chaotic moments.
Example: "It was absolute scenes when they scored the winner!"
Limbs
slangWild celebration, arms and legs everywhere.
Example: "Pure limbs in the stands after that goal!"
Group Stage
tournamentFirst phase where teams are divided into groups. Top 2 (or 3 in 2026) advance to knockouts.
Example: "They were eliminated in the group stage."
Knockout Stage
tournamentSingle elimination rounds after group stage. Lose and you're out.
Example: "The knockout stage begins with the Round of 32."
Golden Boot
tournamentAward given to the tournament's top scorer.
Example: "Mbappé won the Golden Boot in Qatar."
Golden Ball
tournamentAward given to the tournament's best player.
Example: "Messi won the Golden Ball at the 2022 World Cup."
Third Place Playoff
tournamentMatch between losing semi-finalists to determine 3rd and 4th place.
Example: "Croatia won the third place playoff."
Seeding
tournamentRanking teams for the draw based on FIFA rankings or performance.
Example: "Top seeds are placed in Pot 1 for the draw."
Pot
tournamentGroups of teams divided by seeding for the draw.
Example: "Brazil is in Pot 1 while Canada is in Pot 4."
Group of Death
tournamentA group with several strong teams, making qualification difficult for all.
Example: "The 2014 Group D was a true group of death."
Dark Horse
tournamentA team not expected to do well but capable of surprising.
Example: "Morocco was the dark horse of the 2022 World Cup."
Host Nation
tournamentThe country (or countries in 2026) hosting the World Cup.
Example: "Host nations automatically qualify."
